Block Day - "The Devil and Tom Walker"

On block day this week, we read "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving. Click here to download the story. As we read the story, we noticed that the author often "throws shade" in the form of satire. Satire is the use of humor or exaggeration to mock and point out how ridiculous something (or someone) really is. We see that Irving takes every opportunity to make fun of Tom's wife and their marriage. He also points out the hypocrisy of a local church official.

Speed Dating with Transcendentalist Poetry!

On block day this week, we did a "speed dating" activity with some poetry. To download a copy of today's handout, click here.

Basically, we took turns annotating the poems "A Psalm of Life" and "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" which are both written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. We annotated using the TPDASTT method.
