Fear Essay Resources

Some students asked me to post a complete copy of all of the essay-writing resources we had in the lab today, so here we go. Click here to see the Essay Resources packet.

We will be in the library computer lab again tomorrow. The essay is due tomorrow - Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 11:59pm. You must submit this essay to TurnItIn.com - I cannot accept emailed submissions. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO UPLOAD IT. If it is turned in at 12:02am, it's late, and that's -20 points.

MLA Citations for Everything Else

Here are the MLA citations for "The Landlady" and "Why We Crave Horror Movies."

These look a little different because they are from a different source, not our textbook.

For MLA citations for "The Devil and Tom Walker," "Civil Disobedience," and "The Declaration of Independence" - these are from the textbook.

Look at the other MLA citations we did for Nature and Self Reliance and all the others. It'll look like that. Just put the author first and last, the name of the piece, then the name of the textbook and publisher, year of publication, then the page range of the piece you are citing.

"The Landlady"

Today, we read one of Roald Dahl's short stories called "The Landlady." Click here to download the story. This is a little bit different from what we've been doing because this is British literature, not American. Because this is a British piece, it has some terms in it you may not know. Click the links to learn more.

  • Eton is a private school in England.
  • Cambridge is a university in England.
  • Bath is a city in England.

Click here to download the questions for this short story.

Just for fun, here's a pretty good (and very accurate) film adaptation of "The Landlady."

"The Landlady" materials are due on Monday, November 11, 2019.

The Gothic Literature Quiz is also on Monday. This quiz will include questions about the Gothic Literature notes, the short story "The Devil and Tom Walker," and the short story "The Landlady."

Block Day - "The Devil and Tom Walker"

On block day this week, we read "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving. Click here to download the story. As we read the story, we noticed that the author often "throws shade" in the form of satire. Satire is the use of humor or exaggeration to mock and point out how ridiculous something (or someone) really is. We see that Irving takes every opportunity to make fun of Tom's wife and their marriage. He also points out the hypocrisy of a local church official.
