Current options to improve your grade

1. Study for the next vocabulary quiz (February 12, 2016). The notes and Quizlet for Unit 8 are also available.
2. Do extra credit for the next vocabulary quiz (extra credit is due the day of the quiz) - Option 1: Do a Frayer model for each word. Option 2: Write sentences using vocabulary words (5 compound, 5 complex).
3. Come and do corrections on the Julius Caesar Act 1 exam. Corrections are available next week Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school. Please let me know what day you are coming so that I can have your materials prepared.
4. Read the No Fear Shakespeare for Julius Caesar if you need extra help understanding it. Or, of course, you and ask me. :) The final Julius Caesar exam (Acts 2-3) will be February 10-11, 2016.

Essay Revisions - Day 2

Today, we looked at a model essay and analyzed it for its thesis, details, analysis, and "threading." Threading is when you use key words from your thesis and find related words in your body paragraphs. For example, if your thesis in this paper says something about how memories can be a positive influence, then you should have details in your body paragraph that support that idea.

For example:
In your thesis: "Memories can be a positive influence."
In the body paragraph: "smile" "remembered fondly" "family bonds" "bonding time"

Missing something? On November 3, I posted a link to my Antigone folder. Scroll down and find that. It has all the speeches, notes, and other materials that we did in class. IF YOU ARE MISSING SOMETHING, YOU ARE FREE TO PRINT IT OUT AND BRING IT TO ME!

If you are missing warm-ups:

• If you are on a cell phone, you should see a thing that says "pages" - click on that, and from there, you should see options for Warm Ups, Vocabulary, etc. 
• If  you are on an actual computer, look at the links above - you will see where the vocab notes and the warm ups are.

First Try: Crossover SAR

Today, we tried the crossover SAR for the first time this year. The question: Explain how Antigone and Ismene have different perspectives. Explain your answer with evidence from the text.

 Key points from today:

• Typical SAR's have one A-C-E (Answer, Cite Evidence, Explain). Crossovers have two of each of these. 
• You are expected to do this in the same amount of space; the answer box is the same size. Therefore, we have to be very economical with space and quotations.
• To shorten a quote: Don't quote the whole sentence; take only the part of the sentence you need. Use some summarization if you have to. As long as your summarization contains whatever specific detail you need to make your point, you can summarize.
• If you need to quote two different places in the text, that's okay. There are multiple examples of that below. 

2nd Period

In second period, we wrote about their differing perspectives on loyalty. You can see that there are two answers (one for Antigone, one for Ismene) and two pieces of evidence. I added some analysis starters at the end (in orange).

3rd Period

This is a solid 3. there are two answers, two pieces of evidence, and our explanation/analysis widens out to give an insight that reaches out to connect across the text: "This is important because the different perspectives on the law reveal that these sisters are a character foil, and this exchange sets up the central conflict for the play." Note that we also used the keywords "different perspectives" from the question twice. Once in the first part of the answer (blue) and once again as we started the explanation/analysis (yellow).

4th Period

This crossover SAR offers a different type of analysis. Where the 3rd period one gives an insight about the character foil and conflict, this analysis brings in the idea of theme: "The prologue introduces the play's central thematic concept: whether or not you should break the law for family."

5th Period

We did this one a little differently. You see that we did three complete "layers" of color. A-C-E-A-C-E. We once again discussed the character foil, and this is a possible 3 because it reaches across the text to discuss how their differing perspectives cause a change in the sisters' relationship.

6th Period

Here, we finished with an across the text thematic idea.

7th Period

Another great example of a thematic idea.
