Test "Preview"

Today in class, you received a "preview" of the test on block day. I've given you a copy of all the questions that will be asked, but you won't receive the reading pieces until block day. All the pieces are thematically related to content previously covered in class. I gave you the test questions ahead of time for several reasons:

  • You can look up any unfamiliar words, or ask me for clarification about questions if you're not sure what the question is asking for.
  • You can read the questions and find out what genres will be on the test.
  • Based on your previous knowledge of these topics, you can start to formulate answers to the questions before you even read the pieces.
  • Being familiar with the questions will help you find the answers easier on test day!
Students will have 30 minutes to read, discuss, and annotate the pieces with a partner (or in a triad). After the 30 minutes are up, students will rearrange desks so that we are sitting in "test formation" and then you will be given the answer document with the questions on it. For the rest of class, you will answer the questions and complete a paragraph about the essential question.

Because this is a test, students will need to use a paper dictionary to clarify meanings of unknown words.

Periods 2 and 4 have their paragraph due tonight at 11:59pm. For all other classes, this assignment is now past due.

Just a reminder that periods 1, 3, 5, 7 have their paragraphs due tonight by 11:59pm. Periods 2 and 4 have their assignment due tomorrow night at 11:59pm.

Character Paragraph

This week, we started working on a character analysis paragraph. In this paragraph, you will pick one character from The Crucible and analyze that character addresses one of the essential questions.

Essential Questions:

  • What did they value?
  • How did they live?
  • How did they view death?
  • How did they spend their money?
Periods 1, 3, 5, 7: Due Monday, September 30, 2019 by 11:59pm.
Periods 2, 4: Due Tuesday, October 1, 2019 by 11:59pm.

All paragraphs must be submitted on TurnItIn.com. How to submit an assignment on TurnItIn.com. No emailed or handwritten assignments will be accepted. Please refer to the rubric you received today in class.

Changes due to School Closure

First of all, let me say that I hope you are all doing well, keeping safe, and staying dry!

As you know, Humble ISD closed on Thursday and Friday due to inclement weather.

Periods 1, 3, 5, and 7 took the Crucible test on Wednesday; those grades are posted. The posted grade includes the extra credit. Most of you did not turn in the Power Pyramid assignment and the review stations. You need to finish those for Monday. They were due on Wednesday, so they're already late.

Periods 2 and 4 will take the Crucible test on Monday (and Tuesday, if necessary). Please come to class with the review stations and Power Pyramid already done. Two reasons for this: (1) They're good review for the test, and (2) I can grade them while you're testing.

Everyone still working on the review stations: Test review answers are still posted on the class website. Directions from all the review stations are posted, too. Scroll down and you'll see them.

Grades for the 6 weeks were supposed to be due on Monday, but due to the closure, they've extended that. It's a pretty tight deadline for teachers, so let's come to classes ready to go on Monday.

Y'all have a nice weekend.
